Mark Ronson – Bang Bang Bang

Definitely one of my favorite songs thus far.

The video, for me, has to be one of the greatest “take-me-to-my-childhood” visuals ever.

Drake Ft. Young Jeezy – Unforgettable

Drake and Young Jeezy goes hard on this new joint, which samples the late Aaliyah‘s “At Your Best”. Off Drizzy’s Thank Me Later LP. The Fader says it best, however: it is, indeed, Jeezy who murks this track. Download the mp3 below.

John Mayer’s Battle Studies Tour (by 13th Witness)

I’m (in case you don’t know yet) a fan of 13th Witness work.

I’m cool with John Mayer.

Not watching his concert here, though.

But if you are going to catch the dude, here’s a ‘lil taste of what’s coming: a clip from his recent Battle Studies tour. It sure looks fun.

Let me begin this post by saying: THE GRAMMY AWARDS SUCK!

Maybe it’s just because I have, for the most part, strayed away from the usual radio-friendly hits. Perhaps, it’s also because they’ve been giving so much love to sellouts such as The Black Eyed Peas since 2005-’06. Or maybe because it gives too much TV time to [1] country artists that we — the world outside Nashville, Tennessee — never thought existed.

So maybe it’s just me. But as I have been watching, reading, and listening to people’s Grammy accounts these past 4-5 years, I have come to conclude that the awards show has lost some luster. It has become so predictable that I didn’t need to know all the nominees for me to predict a winner and get it correctly at the same time.

Sure, blame it on the internet music movement. Blame it on Hypemachine, NME, Pitchfork, etc. But sometimes, if you’re such an authority to select the best of the best in music, you have to go to these outlets and take a listen.

That said, the music academy did a good job of giving acts like Phoenix and Maxwell their well-deserved trophies.

Still, I’m staying away from the awards show. Just grew tired of watching ’em. I actually am tired of watching award shows, anyway. Maybe that’s it: I just got plain tired of ’em.

Dave’s top 5 picks – Typhoon Edition (September 2009)

Been a while, folks! We all know that the last few weeks were a little bit too much to stomach. I would not even begin to re-open the sad memories cast upon many by typhoon Ondoy. The silver lining in this, however, can be seen through the helping hands of many of our fellowmen.

If YOU, Mr./Ms. Reader, are one of these kindhearted individuals who shared their time (that was a whole week) for the cause, a big thanks and congrats partner!

Music-wise, the past month has brought us some gems. Jay-Z once again cemented his status as the top dog of the hip-hop game with his latest release, The Blueprint 3. The album may not appeal much to a lot of hip-hop heads because of it being a notch below the hype it created earlier in the year, but one cannot deny the power and the ruckus that was brought about by the album’s latest offering, “Empire State of Mind”. The Alicia Keys co-starrer is more than an ode to New York. It is an anthem. One that can be heard and felt by anyone, even outside of the state.

A lot of bangers from the September releases. Here are the five standouts from the past month (click to listen/download):

Jay-Z Feat. Alicia Keys – Empire State of Mind [Roc Nation]

Major Lazer Feat. Nina Sky & Ricky Blaze – Keep it Goin’ Louder [Mad Decent]

Drake Feat. Lil Wayne, KanYe West & Eminem – Forever [Young Money]

Duck Sauce – You’re Nasty [Fool’s Gold]

Udachi + Jubilee – Paypur (Nick Catchdubs Remix feat. The Kid Daytona) [Nightshifters]
