I followed The Black Eyed Peas back in the late 90’s when they made dope-ass music for the college radio crowd and Esthero was their female singer. I remember bumpin’ “BEP Empire” on repeat. It was their one and only collaboration with none other than Chris E. Marin aka DJ Premier, the legendary hip-hop DJ/Producer.
On the track , will.i.am and the crew were taling about real hip-hop, thus, denouncing junk that was starting to rule the mainstream scene at that time.
Ironically, today, BEP has become mainstream junk themselves, straying from their roots in rap music.
I’ll stop here. This good read from LA Weekly’s Lina Lecaro sums up why Will and the rest of the BEP is fast losing credibility. If they haven’t lost it yet.
